Synopsis

Jump is a story that celebrates difference.

12 year-old Edwin Albatross is a circus clown with dreams of becoming a trapeze artist, however, his father, Bencle, represents a long and proud lineage of clowns who believe trapeze artists are “pretentious, glorified gymnasts". Meanwhile, trapeze artists hold their own prejudices, looking down on clowns as cheap entertainment; second-class citizens even.

In a misguided attempt to fit in with the trapeze troupe, Edwin shoplifts a girl’s swimming costume that looks like a trapeze artist’s leotard.  Arriving home, he is surprised by a 13th birthday party where Bencle gives him a precious heirloom – an ancient red nose passed down through generations of the clown family – that Edwin immediately rejects.

Bencle is horrified to discover the girl’s swimming costume and his fears that something is “wrong” with young Edwin are confirmed.  A showdown between father and son ensues before Edwin flees home and runs away to join the… trapeze troupe.

At the circus he falls victim to a cruel prank involving a cream pie.  Bencle witnesses the tragic event and swings into action, finally finding the courage to inspire Edwin to soar to great heights.

Edwin climbs the high trapeze.  He puts on the ancient clown nose given to him by Bencle and jumps – boldly going where no clown has gone before.

Exquisitely droll, clownish and touching, Jump is a genuine quest story seeded in slapstick and circus clown iconography, that ultimately underscores the importance of family when pursuing your dreams.
